Years ago we would buy a side of pork or quarter of beef from a couple farms in the valley.
Recently we tried to go back to them but they aren’t available.
Does anyone have leads on farms that still do this? I don’t much processing, or fancy vacuum packaging, etc.
Minimal cuts so I can prepare it myself for steak, roast, chops, bacon, etc.
Thanks for the advice. where in CB? That’s where I grew up and parents are still there.
Have you asked any butchers? Even the grocery store ones may at least have some leads.
The people at the meat counters don’t have any idea.
That’s not really surprising. Have you tried Gateway?
Next time I’m there, I will ask. Typically I just go to Costco and get the large cuts and break it down at home, but there are a lot of cuts missing when I go that way, but it works.
We run a small farm in Cape Breton. It’s hard without Facebook in Nova Scotia as most are so far behind and still using that as a method to communicate their small business. I’d suggest hitting the smaller farmers markets. Not the huge ones. Ask the folks who sell there about farms that sell by hanging weight. Once you find one that will lead you to another. Go talk to producers. Even if they don’t have what you are looking for they know someone who does.
