Honestly that is a good number. Valve has really helped out the Linux gaming community.

Yah, 5-8 years ago if you asked me what percent of steam games from the top 50 would work on linux by 2021 I woulda guessed 15% max.

Out of the 2 that I wanna play currently, only one does :( The other one is Elite: Dangerous.

I have come to see it this way: there are also games that I would like to play on the Nintendo Switch, but I don’t own one and are not planning to buy one, so I am not overly disappointed that I can’t play those either.

(and if they are playable on an emulator sometime in the future, great :) )

^ The way I see things as well. I have no strong desire to play something but if something catches my eye and works on Linux, great! If not, I keep it moving.

You had issues getting Elite running? There’s a short thread on GOL about getting it running, but basically for me it’s boiled down to one command:

      protontricks 359320 -q dotnet472 win7

(Obviously, you have to run Elite at least once to have it fail first, which creates the PFX directory which that command then modifies).

That’s worked on Manjaro, Mint and most recent PopOS. On the latter, I had to run it two or three times before it “took”, which was weird (by deleting the PFX directory, then re-running the game to fail, then trying the command again), but so far so good - several hundred hours on Linux now, mostly in VR.

Thanks, I’ll try that. I did try some recommended protontricks tricks but I think they installed some variation of mono, which did not work for me. Also the horrible ED launcher at the time even had problems on real Windows, so any such problems might have been even worse on Proton.

The only way I can see that happening is via cloud gaming as the kernel level stuff will probably never happen.

I bet some games are even more performant on linux. we need some crowd-sourced benchmarks to go with this.
