Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So how’s it going?
Just got back from a month in Europe. It’s cold here yo.
While I was gone, work had to make some decisions about what direction to pursue our data needs. I made my recommendation but of course come back to find we’ve taken the most conservative, manual, one-size-fits-“all” solution. Must be that time of the year where I look for a job with worse quality of life but that actually takes data and IT seriously.

Just yesterday I was talking with one of my kids about how in Canada (at least the centre where my sister worked for a while) the preschool kids are allowed to play outside only when the temperature is warmer than -20 C. It’s not too bad here :)

Have you considered high pay, short hours, not caring about everything imploding because the people who make decisions don’t understand them, just let the implosion happen?

As long as my ability to do my job doesn’t get sledgehammered by the implosion, where do I sign up?
I mean, your job probably will get sledgehammered. Just look for employers that always seem to be hiring.
Ain’t that the truth. Or the ones that have been advertising for 3 months straight.
But I’m not sure I’m built for the contractor/project hopping lifestyle. Maybe I need to change my attitude about that stuff. I’m very precious about building good foundations and that sort of thing
I live in Wellington and jump from project to project. I’ve only been doing it a couple of years, but you regularly end up working with people you know because all the projects are just recycling the same staff. Networking and relationships are surprisingly important. I didn’t start until we were in a place we could live on one income, though (my wife has a permanent job).
Maybe something to look into when my wifes position stabilises. I’m in Tauranga though so the critical mass here for IT employment may not be sufficient.
Maybe not. Wellington has an endless supply of government contracts (well, not right now since we are coming up to an election, but normally).

I haven’t had that experience. But TBH despite my comments I carefully pick my managers when applying for jobs.

It’s great that it worked out for you :). I tend to jump around jobs so project work works well for me.
Compared to the 40° and wild fires, I imagine it probably does feel quite cold here.
Ah yes, workplaces are like that. We are supposed to be migrating to ServiceNow which I have started calling ServiceEventually because it’s taking that long.
Reminds me of an internal project I saw named Project Horizon, presumably named for the fact that despite the years spent moving towards it, it never seemed to get any closer.
Anyone else have a house of sick coughing people? My son and my sister are off today, again. But my sister’s bf and I are totally fine.
I had that dream again where my bmx gets stolen.
Last weekend I upgraded my keyboard after living with a shitty office one for a few years. I now have one of these, and it’s just as good as I remember. Can’t stand the company, but the hardware is excellent.

Me! I’ve got it too.

I tend to find flat laptop keyboards for desktops a bit weird.
After I started using one a decade+ ago, I can’t go back. Can’t stand big keys that my fingers keep missing.
And the scissor switches on this model have such great activation feeling and perfect resistance.
If I could get a mechanical with the same feeling, I would.
Probably don’t want one of these then
Tiny fully formed hands or giant keyboard?
Actually neither, both of those would suck!
Giant keyboard - Redragon K605
Perhaps low profile keyboards are more your thing? Nuphy and Keychron for instance make some pretty good looking (and feeling) keyboards.
That top one looks interesting. I keep buying them off AliExpress and then being surprised when they feel cheap and nasty - although the low profile mechanical Havit I got for work has been amazing.
If I could make something like this, I would be so keen:

I probably shouldn’t knock something until I’ve given it a decent try 😀
