From the Wikipedia article, it sounds like a combination of factors. Huge number of birds, potential landing gear issue, and very short time between emergency and impact.

Was it a Boeing plane?
Yup, airbus would have smoothly and automatically bounced over that wall with no damage.
Or had its landing gear lowered?
Or had regular safety inspections
