In 1974 Cyprus was divided de facto when the Turkish army occupied the northern third of the island. The Turkish Cypriots subsequently declared independence in 1983 as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus but were recognised only by Turkey. In 1985 the TRNC adopted a constitution and held its first elections. The United Nations recognises the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus over the entire island of Cyprus.
I’ve now fallen down a rabbit hole of Cypriot modern history.
The ironic thing is that all we in Europe have done is wave a carrot in front of Turkey’s face saying “reform and join us” when the reality is once we admitted CY, there was no fucking way Turkey was getting in without giving back the land they stole (and by stole, I mean stole wholesale.)
If the US does end up dropping out of NATO and Europe keeps it as a military alliance, they should think about kicking Turkey out. It’s held on for geopolitical reasons that only the US really cares about. It’s otherwise been a problem child for decades.
Isn’t Cyprus still caught between Greece and Turkey?

I’d rather have the Turkish on our side against Russia rather than Cyprus if it comes down to it NGL
Turkey was in Russia due to its strangle hold on the exit from the Black Sea.
We have misses now…
