In all 50 states and Washington D.C., it is legal to use pepper spray for self-defense purposes.
If you don’t already have pepper spray, you should get it, one for everyone in your household, and you should carry it.
Why not guns?
The two are not mutually exclusive.
However, pepper spray is much more available to many more people. It can also be more effective at stopping an attacker; people don’t always even know they’ve been shot until later on, even if the wound is ultimately fatal. Pepper spray is also far less lethal, making it a suitable defense tool for someone who doesn’t want to have to think about killing another human being. Pepper spray is more useful at very close ranges.
