Probably because it makes a ton of money. The opinions of people who post online represent a small fraction of people who play games.
And most of those people keep playing anyway lol
4000 hours on record
Review: I spent over $500 worth of DLC on this game but I hate it! They never implemented the features community asked for.
Devs: And we love you for that!
This is very true. I play less than I used to but I’m still in a very active clan and I still drop money occasionally hun pretty things from the store or DLC items
Destiny definitely isn’t in its greatest state right now (and honestly, hasn’t been in a while).
The answer to why they haven’t “ended it yet” is: Because it still makes them money.
Realistically though, if you look at any big discussion for a game you’ll always find people who dislike it (because they tend to be louder than the people who are spending their time playing the game instead).
I used to really like this game. The gunplay and art direction are spectacular, although I got bored of the enemies. I stopped playing a while before they deleted whole planets and questlines, and haven’t felt an urge to go back. Shame, because nothing else quite scratches that itch.
Yeah I bought the original destiny collectors edition, with the little ghost collectible toy thing and all that. I never even bothered playing the second game.
The latest expansion genuinely did shake up the enemies. They still need to … change something. It seems like maybe they will with the next expansion changing how they present the story. We shall see.
I honestly tried to get back into it with an old account. Apparently, the entire world went up in power level with no exceptions, but not my character - meaning there was literally not a single enemy I could kill across the PVE environment to gain better gear/levels to contend with enemies.
I did not feel like making a new character or redoing the tutorial so I decided to not even bother, taking it as a sign the game was poorly thought out.

That’s why I only waste my money on Warframe

I’m a bit surprised nobody mentioned the kernel-level anti-cheat, especially with Lemmy being a very security/privacy-centric place. That was implemented years after people spent money on the game and then basically stole the game/content unless you agreed to a huge change to the policy.
I stopped playing because they implemented that. There’s zero reason for that to ever be a thing in order to just play a game. Especially with the amount of machine-learning we have on what is and isn’t possible for humans to do, detection is completely possible server-side.
I have never played Destiny 2 and wanted to try it out one month ago. I asked on Reddit what to do as a free-to-play player to get a good insight of what the game has to offer.
The gatekeeping was unreal. They said unless I’m willing to dedicate hundreds of hours I should not even try and rather uninstall the game immediately. For sure they made it feel that new players are not welcome.
Playerbase toxicity was a harsh reality. The game story, even in the broadest sense, was hard to grasp. The new player experience in-game was miserable. I have no idea what their money making plan is. Live service games need new players to stay healthy.
It’s not gatekeeping, they were trying to save you. I still play from time to time and it’s… Not awful. But for a new player? I can’t even imagine. I’ve introduced 2 people to it and it’s several hours of explaining shit that bungo can’t be bothered to do. Then to kit yourself out to do anything other than basic strikes, it takes a shitload of grinding.
Sounds like the community of every competitive (or coop campaign) multiplayer game I’ve ever been in. I prefer just to not play online multiplayer, I don’t have the time (or disposable income) to “git gud” enough to be able to even stand a chance against all the obsessed people who pour hundreds of hours into it in the first month and drive everyone else out.
The story is hard to grasp because you’re starting off halfway through it. The entire first half of the campaign is lost media.
I stopped playing when they gutted the game, best decision ever.
I appreciate the shout out to Guild Wars there. Aside from the opaque learning curve it’s one of the most player friendly live service games going.
I mean, Destiny is falling apart right now, give it another year or so.
I still play, I can see me running out of desire to play as much with the changes to the way new content is delivered.
Unless something changes soon for the better I can’t see the game staying afloat for more than the next couple of years. Which is a real shame.
