My ex gave me her old MBP 2019 after the display broke. Instead of getting a new one, she just bought an M1. Anyway…
The mod works great actually. I’m not getting any issues with external displays as some others got. The only con is that I can’t get the KB backlight to work. At all. I’m wondering if it’s because it thinks the “lid” is shut, so it won’t come on. But I’m honestly not sure. I can’t adjust the slider in macOS…any ideas from a genius? I’ve tried everything.
Not 100% sure but… Some MBP had the light sensor on their display. The keyboard would ONLY light up if that sensor detected it was in a dark environment.
There could probably be a tweak online to manipulate that sensor or to always turn on the keyboard backlight.
If the sensor is on the display(I believe so) then it’s obviously gone. I did my research on forcing the keyboard backlight on without the sensor but I can’t find anything.
Does this setting still exist?
Not at all
This sounds like a cool project, would you mind posting some pictures? Did you cover the hinge somehow?
edit: The Verge has an article about the mod
Yeah mine looks exactly like that. I just took it apart myself after reading the article.
Note sure if Lab Tick has been mentioned, but it worked great on my broken MBP 2015 (MacOS Monterey)
Very curious. I installed it and it just tells me my MacBook doesn’t have a backlight.
That is indeed odd. Perhaps the software is outdated, it may simply not be compatible anymore.
I hope you find a solution to your issue!
