It’s just a country code like others mention. Also I imagine it doubles as the “Marxist-Leninist” acronym in some people’s eyes given the developers’ ideology.

Thanks, everyone! I too had found the mali result in my own searches, but that didn’t seem to make sense to me. Guess it was true after all!
Well, it’s also worth noting the creators of lemmy.ml are communist and ML is probably a neat way of linking it to Marxist-Leninism.
