Our instance is only defederated from one other instance and it’s lemmygrad. My question is why? It doesn’t seem like a hate group or anything as far as I can tell. Can someone fill me in?

I hope I posted this to the right place; still getting used to how lemmy works. If I should post elsewhere, let me know.

Before everyone came over from reddit Lemmygrad was even more extreme than it is now, and was one of the largest Lemmy instances. You basically had to either defederate from Lemmygrad or have every conversation get derailed by people going on about how Stalin was actually a pretty chill dude. Defederating from Lemmygrad probably isn’t so important anymore, but it’s just kind of stuck around out of inertia at this point, I think.

This is correct. After all, setting up an instance like Lemmygrad -as an alternative places where discussing politics (especially leftist politics) outside of reddit’s moderation reach- was one of the reasons Lemmy was developed in the first place. Lemmy’s developers are not shy about it, they include it in the official docs.

Well when I was first choosing a lemmy instance to call home I looked into lemmygrad. The sign up message basically said Marxist Lennists and friends only don’t like those don’t join. Which if you pardon the pun is a red flag.

Then I read some posts and basically anything not Marxist Lenninst or Socialism with Chineese characeristics was basically called evil and shunned. Every post I read was just so hostile to any thought even slightly different to theirs. Being called a CIA asset in a posted article was an interesting one I must say.

Okay, but if you’re going to defederate from one instance for ideological reasons, why not others? Someone else linked another instance that is pretty extreme in its right wing ideology, so to not defederate from that one seems sketchy.

It’s a pain in the arse when people make sweeping statements like that.

I see myself as an extremist, self described as on the radical far left. However I’m no way a tankie obsessed with Stalin and Mao and certainly not about to pretend genocides weren’t committed.

There’s certainly takeaways from Stalin and Maos and the ideology they moulded, but too quick people jump to their defences but equally any communism is instantly shot down as crazy.

Guess I’m rambling now. Basically in summary, you can be an extremist on the left that isn’t authoritarian whilst still wanting everyone in society to have a fair share

Tbh what you’re describing isn’t extremism, but quite based. It only seems extreme because everyone has drifted so far right that any kind of leftist talking points are framed as being externe.

Oh I agree. That was kind of what I was getting at I suppose.

The overton window has catapulted so much to the fat right that ‘everyone should have access to healthcare’ is an ‘absurd’ and ‘marxist’ opinion.

It is a hate group in a way, it’s just what they hate is the US, capitalism, “the west”, etc. And their solution is “bring back the ussr at any cost”, so you see a lot of “Ukraine was totally asking for it” and similar.

I get your point, but the US, capitalism and The West aren’t protected characteristics.

I’m on the far left, I think Stalin Simps are silly and deluded. The tankie love over there is too much. Whilst I am critical of NATO and their role in flaming the ongoing conflict in Ukraine I’d in no way try absolving Russia of their actions either.

That doesn’t sound like socialism at all, rather fascism with a hammer and sickle painted on its face

I’m in no way a tankie, but their reasoning is lacking for me if they aren’t going to also de-federate from exploding heads etc

I picked the SDF instance for this reason, otherwise I would be on aussie.zone or lemmygrad as my main. I also have one on lemmy.ml but I prefer to distribute the server load.

Honestly I may change instances over it… It doesn’t sit right with me to only defederate from just an extreme leftist instance instead of both that and the extreme right one.

I’d personally rather defederate from neither and leave it up to the individual user to block what they don’t want to see

Here we go with this question again…

I will let smarter people explain this this time.

Edit: sorry for my useless comment, my initial thought was that it may help give the post more visibility but when I realised that it would get responses anyway it was already too late to back out lol.

@nondescript_citizen “Why do these people defederate from us? We did nothing wrong.”

Yep, that’s how it goes. Thin-skinned people will defederate from you just because you federate with some other people. Some instances defederate from you because of arguments over frontends. Some instances defederate from everyone (Gab).

They usually have this funny idea that if they defederate from a group of people, that their posts get through and get exposure but not vice-versa. What they don’t get is that users typically mute instances that don’t federate with them, so it ends up being two-way most of the time.
