Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has been suspended six games for high-sticking Toronto Maple Leafs forward Noah Gregor, the department of player safety announced Friday.
You know he’s only got to get suspensions if he commits dangerous acts right? Surely the name of the game here should be to stop players from potentially hurting other players?
I won’t lie. As a Capitals fan I absolutely adore Wilson. He’ll likely get the C after Ovechkin has retired. He plays with an edge, he’s got speed and he’s huge…
But he’s got to cut out these boneheaded plays. I don’t think this was a deliberate intent to injure, but I do think (like a toddler) he thrashed out because he was angry, and the result of that was a pretty nasty injury to an opposing player.
Deliberate or not, you’ve got to be significantly more careful when you’re on the ice. Being angry and remorseful isn’t good enough anymore. He’s a leader on the team, and this selfish act has cost the team during the most important stretch of the season.
Oh I’ll definitely recognize his skill, no doubt about that. As for his leadership, I don’t follow the Caps so I’ll have to take your word for it.
Also, I’m not trying to say you’re wrong for loving him. I’ll admit to something similar as a Bruins fan with Marchand. I haven’t followed hockey in general as much in the past few years so I can’t speak to how he’s handling captaincy, but I always loved him even when he was just the King Rat. I thought that even though he went too far sometimes, he was a player that only got more skilled with age, never failed to hustle, and was really good at his main goal of ticking people off. So I completely understand the dichotomy of loving a player who often rides the line and sometimes crosses it.

I meant I hope for him to play as little as possible. I’ll admit I could have worded it better.
Bottom line I hope he’s on the ice less so he can’t put as many people in harms way for no reason. No place for his style of play in any pro league.
