Microsoft, which has invested over $11 billion in OpenAI and now uses OpenAI’s tech on its platforms, was apparently informed of the board’s decision to fire Altman five minutes before the wider world. Its leadership was furious and seemingly led the effort to have Altman reinstated.

That explains it. No matter what shady shit Altman might have been up to, giving Microsoft basically zero notice then cratering their stock was never going to end well for the OpenAI board.

Altman could still decide to “spend more time with family” a few months from now, but Microsoft wants its pound of flesh from the board immediately.
