Ah! Thought it was based on a hashtag! And I agree no reason to post it here - was just confused why it didn’t appear here. Thanks for the clarification!
It is a little complicated: communities hosted on Mbin could include posts based on hashtags, but only if those posts make it to the instance somehow - for example, if a user on the Mbin instance follows the Mastodon user who posted it. The admin of the Mbin community decides which hashtags should be included.
Lemmy, has no such functionality, so it needs content to be posted directly.
Yeah that does sound complicated. I thought this entire time that lemmy’s communities were hashtags in reality and when someone makes a post in a community it would be displayed on mastodon as a normal post but with a hashtag of the community.
Didn’t know communities were actual users on mastodon!
If you open a Lemmy community on Mastodon you’ll see it tagged as a group, so Mastodon is aware it’s not a normal user - however, Mastodon has not yet implemented its own group functionality, so other than that badge it’s not so clear how a group is different from a user.
And then there’s the element that communities on Lemmy, PieFed and Mbin all work differently against Mastodon - the groups will behave differently depending on which software they originate from.
Mastodon is working on implementing groups. Hopefully one day when they are done with their specification, the Threadiverse software will be able to adjust to it (if necessary) and play along with Mastodon in a more intuitive way. :)
That would be amazing, I recall mbin (not sure about piefed?) can also show microblog posts and I really wish for more interoperability between these systems.
Thanks for explaining this to me! Guess I should make a mastodon account and try it out for myself on a test community of one of threadiverse instances :)
Mbin is the best at communicating with Mastodon, as it basically has full microblogging functionality. The only problem is that it’s hidden away in separate feeds, so it’s easy to forget about.
PieFed does more than Lemmy in order to communicate with Mastodon (by supporting unofficial Mastodon groups, a.gup.pe), but it remains mostly separated from the microblogging sphere. I imagine once Mastodon gets official group support Piefed will be quick to support it. :)
Yeah I used kbin when kbin.social was still up and noticed that the whole microblogging thing was a bit hidden. But that is super exciting. Also now I know the whole deal with a.gup.pe (was wondering if this is official or just a kind of a community effort).
Might have to give piefed a try too - I keep seeing more and more accounts posting from piefed.social :)
It does look appealing, I just had my heart broken when kbin.social died and defaulted back to my lemmy account. But PieFed has been there for quite some time now!

I cannot recommend PieFed enough!
