Italy’s police chief has ordered Airbnb-style owners to verify the identity of guests in person rather than remotely as visitor numbers surge, according to a circular seen by AFP on Tuesday. The measure is put into place following security concerns linked to the expansion of tourist accommodation.

    There are a lot of issues with zoning laws that don’t fall into the knee jerk libertarian category. A lot of places disallow things like mixed use zoning and high density residential.

      For values of “lots of places” that are limited to North America. In Germany if you’re a hair stylist or supermarket you can set up shop literally anywhere: As you’re quiet enough you can set up in a residential area, as you’re not a residence you can set up in an heavy industry area. There may be height restrictions and other local details, but no limit to number of residences in a building as long as each still has a liveable size and a window, college dorm room plus small bath is about the minimum. There is no zoning category that Americans would consider non-mixed.

      High density residential is overvalued, you quickly get diminishing returns and above an average of eight storeys or such things quickly become negative: All those folks also need green space, they need transport, they need infrastructure, you can’t give every single skyscraper its own metro station. Think Bronx, not Manhattan. Also way cheaper and don’t tell me you don’t have space you’re not Singapore.
