I got the HG 1/144 GM (Shoulder Cannon Equipped/Missile Pod Equipped) and I’m super excited to build it!
My experience with water transfer decals is lacking, I did some on my Guncannon and you can see an edge on one of the larger leg decals.
Any tips/tools/recommendations to help me make the decals look as clean as possible?
I’ve got tweezers and a craft knife, not sure what tools would help, I’ve seen those little sponge tools and decal fluid. I’ve tried different soaking times and suspect I was impatient. Honestly the whole process was pretty fiddly and stressful and this dude has WAY MORE TO DO!
Honestly, patience is the name of the game. As long as the decal isn’t ripped or crumbled, you should be able to re-wet it and adjust it again.
Cut each decal out before you wet it, you should only need to dip it for a few seconds and then let the water do it’s work. I usually use a damp q-tip to slide the decal from the sheet onto the part and to adjust it in place. Then, once you’re sure it’s in the right place use the dry side to barely kiss the decal to absorb the excess water on it. If you bump it off course, just use the wet end again to transfer a bit of water onto the decal and let it absorb so that it’s re-positionable.
I personally don’t use anything other than just water. No Mr Setter, Mr Softer, or topcoat. I do my models just decals and panel liner and they look great to me. But it’s your model, do what looks good to you.
This is how to do it. If I’m not putting them in an ensloure I will throw a light top coat as to not mess up the decals while dusting/moving.

Would you recommend adding decals before building (after cleaning nubs etc)?
It depends on the part and the decal location. Usually I like to build first, so that I can see how the decal fits in the bigger picture. But some decal locations aren’t very accessible after assembly, but sometimes I still assemble then pull the parts off if necessary.
But that’s just my preference, whatever works best for you is valid.
