Reddit Is Fun was the only way I browsed Reddit on mobile. The mobile app is crap and doesn’t actually properly load posts. I get down a few scrolls and it ends like there isn’t anything else to view.
This doesn’t belong here. It’s completely infuriating.
I just installed Jerboa and it totally kicks ass! I will miss rif but with such a nice replacement I can just comfortably switch to lemmy
Jerboa won’t accept my login. Frustrating
It works okay, It’s the servers that are following over.
I can’t figure out where to enter login details…
It’s kind of hidden. Tap the 3 lines in the top-left corner, then pick with with “Local” or “All” and there should be an option in there to pick an instance and enter your login/pass.
On the app, go into the top left. It will say “Anonymous” at the top of the menu. Tap that and click “add account.”
Thank you
password might be too long
Mine says password is too small.
Password is "*****’ if anyone can try logging in pls
RIF was such a good app. Hopefully Jerboa will get there, and Lemmy, as a whole, will get to a comparable state. Already liking Jerboa a lot honestly. RIF will of course be missed though
I think Third Party Reddit apps are going to become the norm for Lemmy. I know that at least Sync’s developer is looking into supporting Lemmy with their app. I love Sync, so that would be great for me. Hopefully other apps follow.
I hope so!
Is Jerboa a mobile app? I looked in iOS App Store and couldn’t find anything.
I mostly used Sync for Reddit until I recently switched to iPhone and then Apollo. Both fantastic apps.
I went from Alien Blue to Apollo. Fuck reddit for killing great apps.
Yup, same here. Really sucks to see them give so few fucks about their user base. Oh well, time to switch.
i love Sync for Reddit, it just looks and feels so good compared to other Reddit client. hoping for a Lemmy equivalent as Jerboa is still a bit rough
+1 been a Sync user for probably over 10 years… It’s been an app I’ve opened near daily since then too, I’ll miss it.
How do we get the Reddit is Fun guy to make Lemmy is Bester‽
RIF is all I ever used, too. I’ll miss it!
Ditto. Been there since the beginning of the reddit mobile api launch; tried a few different apps and RiF was by far the most comfortable and familiar. Alas, nothing gold can stay.
This day has been a long time coming though. Sucks to have to abandon 15 years of my internet life, memes, and jokes but when one server closes its doors to its developers, 5 more open up, probably
Apollo (the premier iOS app for Reddit) is also shutting down. It’ll make Reddit unusable on mobile, so therefore, why bother with desktop.
Driving away thousands or millions of customers is a curious strategy for preparing for IPO. Or if you prefer, “It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for 'em.”
I saw a comment saying something like “even if reddit loses 99% of third party app users, they will increase profits by aggressively driving the remaining 1% onto the bag-of-pus official app”. I don’t agree. But even if it were true, it’s already done irreparable damage to reddit. It will just go the way of twitter.
Looking at the userbase of my subs, less than 1/3 use the Reddit app so they definitely won’t increase profits if the 2/3 leave.
It’s absolutely wild how quickly they did this too. They could have given a couple months lead time for this to play out but they just decided to pull the rug out from under everyone and act like their hands are tied.
Typical corpo greed. The entire generation is “point fingers, shift blame” with absolutely no consequences for lack of accountability.
No one gives a shit, and anyone who benefits is more than happy to swipe another bag of cash whilst looking the other way.
“Tis a silly game. The only winning move is not to play.”
Well this isn’t mildly infuriating. It’s damn right maddening!
For people who still want to surf reddit on the short term, RedReader has been exempted from this BS for accessibility, since blind people rely on the app to surf on reddit. But it might not last and the bean counters on reddit could say that their app is accessible enough, which will spell the end for all 3rd party apps.
Official Reddit will probably half ass a text to speech thing very soon and start to charge RedReader like the other 3rd party apps.
Started on Reddit with the RiF app back in 2013 I believe. Only way I ever browsed Reddit really, didn’t bother much on PC unless I was making a larger post.
I’m happy to be ditching Reddit and trying something new here. Currently using Jerboa app. So far not too bad. Starting to understand how all this works!
In an effort to migrate, try to bring over a reddit sub. I made frugal community here.
Years ago, I got banned from r/frugal for mentioning a VPN.
Let’s be honest, this price change was all about being able to charge the big corps mega money for access to their data in order to train new generations of AI. The price is absurd, yes, but the owners of reddit know that Google and Microsoft have deep pockets (among other global corps wanting the massive amount of data reddit has saved).
They never expected the third party apps to be able to pay this much and frankly, they don’t care. It’s HUGE profit from AI corps, and the losses, at least short term, will be overshadowed by the gains. Long term? I don’t know, this isn’t my area of expertise, but, like I did with Twitter, I have moved on so at this point, it’s no longer relevant to me.
I’m deleting all my posts, one by one on June 29. Then deleting my account
I used shreddit to delete all mine today. Made a little tweak to the source to replace all my comments with a fuck you message to spez before deleting them.
The Nuke Reddit extension still works if you us Microsoft Edge. That’s the easiest way to delete posts/comments.
If they’re more than a day old though, someone has already archived it. I get the nuking from a F U perspective, but it’s not really removing things from the internet…
No, but it does delete content other uses may have saved.
For instance, when I went today to look at SAVED posts, I was surprised to see how many people have already deleted user accounts and/or content. For most users who don’t use the archives, it devalues the point in using reddit.
Too easy to scrape that data, the replies don’t update much after 2 days, and even then it’s pretty easy to re-scrape and check. And the data is not owned by reddit, its actually owned by their users. So if MS wants to scrape it, they need copyright permissions from the user, not reddit.
True, users do maintain copyright of anything they write, but they also give reddit license to use it how it wants, including sub-licensing it to others. That means the corps absolutely DO NOT need the permission of users to train their AI. They just buy the rights to use the data from reddit.

This includes images and videos that are uploaded to the reddit servers directly.
Reddit has the right to use the data and sell that data to others. Also, some data you can scrape, but there’s additional data that is available only through the API. Web scraping is not reliable, especially if reddit actively flags your spider and blocks it. They are not the idiots we want to believe they are. No mega corp is going to risk not having competitive access to data to feed their AIs when the cost for them to just pay is insignificant.
This shit was definitely not in the user agreement when I signed up in 2007.
Make sure you leave an appropriate vote on the app store for the app.

Sync dev said that it was either switch to a subscription model and provide less services or shut down. There isn’t any wiggle room from the discussions that are being made public.
I Wonder if Apollo could be the 3P app for Lemmy.
Sync’s developer is looking into support for Lemmy, so hopefully we’ll have that on the Android side as I used Sync. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apollo’s developer does this as well.
