Valve did a thing.
This is great! Excited to try it out and hopeful this is the precursor to a hardware announcement. Valve has a tradition of announcing hardware on oculus announcement days…
I actually thought at first this is about a new headset 🥲
I hope you’re right! 🤞
Copium. I hope that’s gonna happen soon!
Does this work on Linux?
“Transition to the Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (sniper) for improved compatibility.”
More so?
I have an HTC Vive I haven’t used it in a probably a year but it worked fine with steamvr and arch, I think their was only one game I couldn’t play but it was related to a bug with nvidias driver

Here’s a more direct link.
I just squealed. I was worried they were going to do a hard cutoff for the new hardware, but this makes it seem like I can keep using my gear for years to come!
Has anyone tried it on Linux yet?
Eh, I guess it’s neat? What I’d really like is for steam VR home to get some improvements like the ability to import custom models as avatars instead of having to build an avatar from primitives, along with an API that lets developers support using your SteamVR avatar; or a full VR desktop instead of a floating window that mirrors your monitor. They could have an API that lets people in your home instance (bet you didn’t know it supports multiplayer) vote on a game to play (say, phasmophobia), and then launch the game and put everyone into the same lobby.
SteamVR’s home is in a weird place because it has a lot of potential, but Valve doesn’t fully utilize any of it. It has the potential to dethrone vrchat and become a social platform like Fuckerberg wanted the metaverse to be, but Valve has seemingly decided not to flesh it out to its full potential. Instead its only real use is as a game launcher and you don’t even need to use it for that; you could disable it altogether and launch directly from the SteamVR void.
I agree Steam Home could use a little love, but I’m hoping this is just a sign of things to come. I mean 2.0 was supposed to come out like 3 years ago, so the fact it’s finally happening is encouraging.
Yeah I’m with you on a few things, I’m not as much into gaming as when I was younger, but then I got a headset and I felt like I did when I was young.
You’re right Steam was one of big VR players when it was just starting it was awesome but nothing has really progressed beyond that initial wow VR feeling. Honestly I was hoping 2020s was going to be when we started introducing VR movies.
