“The train operator was able to immediately apply the emergency brake when the passenger jumped on the tracks,” said Transportation Assistant Secretary for Railways Jorjette Aquino.

Remember when Filipinos used to say that we should emulate Singapore’s penalty for suicide attempts? I wonder if our attitude towards it has improved with mental health getting some exposure and attention now.

Had to look it up, and found the following from Wikipedia:

Suicide was decriminalised in Singapore with the passing of the Criminal Law Reform Bill on 6 May 2019.

Before that, Section 309 of the Penal Code stated that “Whoever attempts to commit suicide, and does any act towards the commission of such offence, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.” The section was rarely enforced, between 2013 and 2015, only 0.6% of reported cases was brought to court.

Akala ko pa naman death penalty, hahahahaha!

That’s one hell of a gambit if you intend to off yourself, lol.

Still doesn’t change the fact that it’s a stupid law. Naalala ko lang tuloy yung Buencamino’s who had no idea their daughter was depressed. Ano yun, makukulong sila for failing to notice the signs?

Suicide by cop is a thing though, mostly by those who can’t gather enough motivation to off themselves.

It’s indeed a stupid law. Though there might be scenarios where that law would be useful (like the imprisonment be replaced by a psychiatric evaluation and treatment) it’s still stupid that suicide is criminalized.

This would probably be the hottest take here, but here goes:

Suicide via LRT is stupid. It doesn’t run fast enough to cause an instantly fatal injury (unless you get ‘lucky’ enough to be decapitated, though IDK how instant such a death would be). Moreover because of that relatively slow speed, the (poor) driver would still have enough time to react and apply the emergency brakes. One would probably have more ‘success’ crossing Commonwealth Avenue in the dead of the night.

I can probably choose a more fitting location, like inside a … you know what, I’ll just keep that to myself, lol!

But yeah, no idea how crowded the place is, but if it’s indeed a statement, one could choose more crowded locations, which would create more impact.

@megane_kun it doesnt have to be a place with lots of people methinks. Its just a message for someone out there or a cry for help maybe? Its like I-wanna-die-but-not-really-just-enough-to-severely-injure-myself-as-an-act-of-self-sabotage kinda attempt.

Anw, i dont know why im indulging in this lol not like I can speak for the semi dead but not really guy who did jump off

Ah~!‌ I get it now. I was conflating the “terrorist” angle with the “cry for help” angle.

True though, I’m also indulging in this train of thought (pun not intended, maybe?) just because. Personally, I’d rather the deed be unseen and unable to be stopped by anyone, but that’s just me.
