“A significant error was made in a headline on a story in Friday’s print sports section about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif incorrectly describing her as transgender. She is not. Additionally, our initial correction of this error neglected to note that she was born female. We recognize the magnitude of this mistake and have corrected it in the epaper, the electronic version of the printed Globe. This editing lapse is regretful and unacceptable and we apologize to Khelif, to Associated Press writer Greg Beacham, and to you, our readers.”

I have c&p’d the pinned comment.Sure, but the damage is done. A major US newspaper giving credence to the lies is a win for the people spreading hate, whether there is a retraction or not. It’s not about facts after all.

The globe, like the NYT, has had a significant right wing shift behind the scenes that prevents them with aligning with common sense and societal progress.

Small note. The writer didn’t choose the title, the editorial staff at the Boston Globe did. The person who actually wrote the article, Greg Beacham is a writer for the Associated Press, which syndicates their stories to papers worldwide. Those papers are then allowed to choose the headline they run with if they decide to run it. That’s why he’s included in the apology. He talked about it over on his Twitter.
So I have a hard time believing anything other than actual malice on the part of the Globe’s editorial staff.
