Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Movie/TV characters always make it through the craziest plot and somehow not get forever traumatized by it. I wish I could be like that, but instead I stuggle to even make/keep therapy appointments.English

46·6 hours agoThis is such a Captain Obvious take. Musk publicly and not at all sneakily modified Grok to do things like give him accolades, be more anti-woke and sycophantic towards Trump and cronies. Of course he’s manipulating the platform to fall in line with his personal views.

3·6 hours agoSo technological.
Sorry, I should have linked it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.loomishouse.ol_reader_app
I think the 3.5 rating is generous but its technically usable.
If you’re looking for free, I would suggest OpenLibrary, which has an android app: https://openlibrary.org/
I will say that the app/site is not fun to use. It’s not intuitive and very poor in it’s “rental” process.Since I have an Amazon Prime account, I most often read books available for free that are included with Prime.

4·2 days agoI hope you find a balance that adds quality to your life, whether that’s different apps, less of the same apps or just no apps at all.
I do use a modified version of Instagram(AeroInsta, I think it’s called) so I don’t see ads and I only view my “following” feed so I only ever see things I want(cats, owls, drag racing, mountainbiking, restorations, etc. etc.) and I can’t think of the last time I saw something that made me angry. I only say this in case it’s a preferred solution for you. My only other outlets are Lemmy, Pixelfed and Loops. They’re very easy to tailor to my likes since they don’t push ragebait for profit. I do watch Youtube often but again, it’s ad-free(including sponsorblock) and it’s only my subscription so I never see anything I don’t want.
Take care of yourself.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think life will be like in the future?English
19·2 days agoBillionaires have finally achieved attaining 100% of the world wealth. Everyone not a billionaire is homeless. Although destitute, every citizen owns a pair of Meta glasses whose latest version allows the corporation to harvest brainpower through the ocular socket, powering the entire BillionaireVerse where they can SA virtual children in the event they don’t find any of the local children sexy enough. In exchange for their brainpower, the glasses will convert the user’s cardboard box home into visual representations of expensive homes. The economy is driven solely by billionaires selling to other billionaires. Epstein Island has been made a historical landmark where the billionaires come every year to pray in front of the lifesize statue of Donald Trump blowing Clinton.

112·2 days agoI’m glad that those interested or in many cases, obsessed with politics have a place to discuss it but I have no interest in seeing it so In conjunction with instance and community blocking, I use the filters to block any new “hot” political word or phrase that I find my feed inundated with. Once the core block list is built, adding something new is only required every other week or so to keep the feed politics-free.
The instance and community blocks do the majority of the heavy lifting but a filter list is an absolute necessity to get rid of the users that insist on injecting politics into every community they find.

I think that would be my path as it relates to communities where I actually ended up having a social community involved. I would say that it also is a direct increase in toxicity as it works downward. I find Lemmy/Piefed just as toxic as any other platform but the lack of a forced algorithm lets me basically mute all of the negative content sources and it’s niche enough that you can actually mute the negative influence, which makes for a pleasant experience.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's stopping youtube from just going full authoritarian and mandate DRM for all their videos in attempt to prevent people from downloading it or block ads?English
4·3 days agoI imagine the fact that they allow the embedding of videos on other sites make it hard to restrict the playback to that degree. There seems to be a tipping point at which they’ll work on breaking something, more than likely based on it’s popularity When enough 3rd party frontends figured out background playback, they took the time to develop a way to break it. I think the same will happen when they feel too many people are circumventing their data scraping, ads or algorithms. They’ll finally go all in but it’s clear that they don’t want to do that just yet.

5·3 days agoI can see a mouse but I bet if the ears were modified to connect at the bottom, it would get rid of the goat that some are seeing. They’re seeing horns instead of ears. Maybe make them smaller and shift upwards so they can connect at each end? Currently, they’re disproportionately large for a mouse but more suited to an elephant.

211·3 days agoI’m sure that’s what they mean. I scroll with “New/All” and this is a fantastic way to read new stuff you have never heard about BUT the caveat is: this is an enjoyable scroll ONLY after you’ve developed a good block list of users, instances and communities. Otherwise, you’ll get inundated with the few but very vocal and toxic communities that make Lemmy feel like a clone of Reddit/Twitter/etc.
