Since lemmy is still a small place, and there’s not too many of us yet here (what, 12?), I thought I’d create a thread for intros to keep things a bit lively. Introduce yourself in the comments and in the spirit of the community throw in your favourite Black Metal band or gig or smth.!
Don’t know if anyone is interested in this kind of stuff, but might as well throw it there.
I’m just your average regular type of Finnish chap with a fiery passion for homebrewing and Satan.
For myself, I’m a Finnish metalhead alternating between living up north in Oulu and down south in Tampere. More of an avantgarde guy, so prefer more melodic stuff usually, but well, seems like every avantgarde band has an awesome black metal debut album. (Looking at you, Solefald!)
Currently mostly banging to Cult of Fire which has been a favourite now for a half a year or something.
Avant garde? What are some of your favorites? More Dodheimsgard and Arcturus or Portal and Imperial Triumphant vibes? There’s a wide spectrum of styles that fit even within that niche of a niche. Cult of Fire is really good, especially that album. For me Urfaust hits many of the same notes.
Definitely more Dødheimsgard and Arcturus. Transcending Bizarre?, Solefald, In the Woods…, (and maybe Nechochwen if that counts) are among my favourites. Diablo Swing Orchestra too if I go a bit more on a tangent.
I’ve never gotten that much into Urfaust, it’s pretty good and I don’t mind listening to it but I rarely put it on myself for some reason, not exactly sure why.
Hey @ananas@sopuli.xyz! Fun idea!
I’m Finnish from pääkaupunkiseutu. A metalhead , programmer, and many other things. My most recent gig was Gaerea with Venenum Dei. Venenum Dei was a very pleasant surprise, and Gaerea is simply crazy live - very high energy. If you don’t know them, think maybe like a Nightbringer that went more aggro and less evil.
This year I’ll be going to Tuska to indulge in some -core stuff, but most excited for Imperial Triumphant, A. A. Williams and Blood Incantation. Also later in the summer I’ll be travelling to my first metal festival outside of Finland. Brutal Assault is calling!
Gaerea seems pretty nice, hadn’t heard of them before. :O
Ooo, Brutal Assault. Been there ~10 times. Fun festival, sadly going to miss it this year. You can probably say hi to our usual Finnish-German camp somewhere on the left side up the split on the road where you start walking towards the area from Brutal Bar (you’ll probably know what I mean when you get there)
(Or maybe just say hi to @WormEmperor@sopuli.xyz, he’s probably going to be somewhere in that camp)
I’ll definitely check that out - I’m going solo so some idea of where to head to is very welcome.
Probably not this year, unfortunately :/
Just a stupid American, DevOps / SRE guy with not much of a life and doesn’t even know what black metal is (so please give suggestions of what to try). But I’ll comment here anyway because you all seem nice. Some bands I listen to - Thousand Foot Krutch, Theory of a Deadman, Ra, Pillar, Cemetery Sun.
Hi and welcome!
I don’t really have any suggestions because I don’t think it’s too common to make the jump from Hard and Alt rock straight to black metal. Maybe someone else has an on-ramp list ready?
Stick around and listen to the songs people post here and see if something piques your interest! I’ll be trying to post a fairly diverse range of BM to get us rolling.
Hey there. It’s nice to find another community for BM outside of Reddit! I have a project with a record out on Avantgarde: astralpath.bandcamp.com if you care to check it out.
I’m a huge Enslaved fan. I think I’d have to say they’re my favourite black metal band. My friend and I jam along to a fully fleshed out Enslaved cover session in Reaper pretty regularly. He plays drums along to a click in his ears and all the other instruments and vocals are piped out of the PA except for the left channel guitar which I fill in myself. All of this was recorded for fun so we could have multitracks to jam to as we see fit. We have a blast with it.
Has anyone seen the piano & drums cover of Deathspell Omega’s The Repellent Scars of Abandon and Election on Youtube? That might be my favourite BM video of all time.
