Kherson has been free from Russian occupation for more than 3 years. But the war never truly left. Russian FPV and Molniya drones continue to terrorize the city daily, targeting civilians and infrastructure. To defend the people still living here, Ukrainian mobile air defense groups patrol the streets on foot — listening for drones before they appear overhead. In this documentary report, we follow twin brothers Eugene and Serhii during one of their patrols near the Dnipro riverbank, where every sound could mean danger.

Notice at 3:53 the body language, he goes from being in “monitoring mode” with an alert but relaxed posture to spotting the Molniya drone, fluidly drawing his rifle up to the target without unnecessary fuss and planting himself into a serious firing position all while keeping his eye on the drone. It is an instantaneous but intentional act like something an athlete practices.

Firing an AK-47 at a high angle in accurate enough bursts to have a chance at shooting down drones like Molniyas is not something that can be accomplished by haphazard firearms form and transitioning to a firing position stable enough to do so quickly and smoothly is much harder than it looks.

Notice also how in the course of following the flight path of the fixed wing drone this guy transitions his firing position naturally to a side brace on the wall, which also progressively places him behind more and more cover as the drone passes overhead and the risk of being spotted or fired back at increases the longer he fires at them. He is also in the shadow of the building making it harder to spot him too.

There is a lot that goes into this, it is very telling of how professional, focused and skilled these people are just watching them.

edit also a very good demonstration of the uniquely encompassing flavor of terror that artillery barrages create that is different than drones.
