Bill Gates is moving $20 billion of his wealth into the endowment of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is ramping up its spending in the face of global challenges including the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Bill Gates is a parasite. What he does with his monopoly spoils is donate them to his own foundations, which allows him to write off a huge amount of tax liability. He ultimately controls these foundations, therefore the funds are still under his control. The funds are being used to exert a huge amount of unipolar influence on global health (e.g., via the WHO), education (charter schools, circumventing public education), and from what I hear, arable land in the U.S.

Philanthropy is no substitute for functioning public investment. Don’t cheer for bill gates.

arable land in the U.S.

At least according to Gates, this land is being rented back to farmers with the stipulation that they be part of various research projects on more efficient use of resources like irrigation water.

bill gates isn’t rich anymore because he donated his money to the …checks notes… gates foundation?

As usual with gates, I’ll wait to judge, but my general thoughts have been that he’s been giving back far too slowly for how much he has. With that being said, he is giving a lot more back than most billionaires, which is practically unfathomable.

@guojing@lemmy.ml

Hes not giving back, just moving money to his own foundations. Which make money by investing in different companies.

Gates foundation has pledged and spent quite a bit of money on humanitarian causes such as the malaria vaccine. You’re right to criticize the companies operations, however, as they aren’t just giving money away. I want to stress that a lot more could be done, but he’s still outpacing other billionaires by quite a bit and I think we need to recognize the good alongside the bad.

Its not about “good billionares vs bad billionaires”. These people have more power than entire countries, and so their assets need to be immediately nationalized and managed by the society.

What I would like to see and what is realistic to happen are two drastically different things, and I’m willing to celebrate any steps in the right direction if it encourages others to act similarly in the system we have.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is just an elaborate tax evasion scheme.

Maybe also, but they do fund a lot of medical research and some aid in developing countries.

Hasn’t his foundation not spent any money, but instead invested it the whole time?

@pingveno@lemmy.ml

No, it constantly spends billions on a variety of projects. They run the full gamut: anti-polio, anti-malaria, education, sanitation, HIV treatment/prevention, family planning, COVID-19 response.

From just a quick search, they didn’t invest in Coca-Cola. They partnered with them to help small farmers establish themselves in Uganda as part of Coca-Cola’s supply chain.

also they have 13bn (!!) in Berkshire Hathaway, a holding company run by Warren Buffet.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (/ˈbɜːrkʃər/) is an American multinational conglomerate holding company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. The company wholly owns GEICO, Duracell, Dairy Queen, BNSF Railway, Lubrizol, Fruit of the Loom, Helzberg Diamonds, Long & Foster, FlightSafety International, Shaw Industries, Pampered Chef, Forest River, and NetJets, and also owns 38.6% of Pilot Flying J;[4] and significant minority holdings in public companies Kraft Heinz Company (26.7%), American Express (18.8%), Bank of America (11.9%), The Coca-Cola Company (9.32%), and Apple (5.56%).[5]

This company, again, does hold 9% of the Coca-Cola Company.

If you think that sort of … thing, what kind of evidence do you require to believe something else?

Here’s some of their annual reports anyway. The seem to be funneling somewhere north of $5B dollars every year to many kinds of projects. Dunno (and cannot be bothered to read the reports that meticulously to find out) how much of that is overhead – they have a surprising amount of personnel (almost 2000). https://www.gatesfoundation.org/about/financials/annual-reports

I looked at their wikipedia page and they don’t seem as bad as I thought. I still think that all the money should be spend democratically and not decided by some rich fuckers. Also they do invest a shitload of money!

Not to mention all the eugenics campaigns this clown is responsible for in africa and india. He dodged trial in supreme court in India for killing an entire population of teen girls. Killing and damaging to be precise. And please don’t be one of those idiots who tries searching for this on the corporate censored search engines and then claim “herrp couldn’t find that derpp”
